Summary, Etc. Set in 1926, this novel follows Harriet Stone, an educated African American woman, and Lovey, a twelve-year-old girl in her care, as they relocate from Connecticut to Harlem. Invited to live in a boardinghouse run by Harriet's cousin, the move initially promises stability but quickly gives way to uncertainty after a death occurs within the household. As Harriet becomes involved in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident, she forms connections with other residents while confronting questions of identity, trust, and personal safety. The story combines historical setting with elements of mystery and suspense.
